Colorado Model Content Standards Specific to Media Literacy
 
Reading and Writing Standards
 
Standard 4:  Students apply thinking skills to their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing.
 
Standard 5:  Students read to locate, select, and make use of relevant information from a variety of media, reference, and technological sources.
 
Information Literacy Standards
 
Standard 1:  The student who is information literate accesses information efficiently and effectively.
 
Standard 2:  The student who is information literate evaluates information critically and competently.
 
Standard 3: The student who is information literate uses information accurately and creatively.
 
Standard 7:  The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and recognizes the importance of information to a democratic society. 
 
Standard 8:  The student who contributes positively to the learning community and to society is information literate and practices ethical behavior in regard to information and information technology.  
 
 
 
Goals for Media Literacy Education
 
Skills for Critical Thinking About the Internet, TV, Radio, Print, Videos and Movies
 
1) The student will learn how to evaluate information critically and competently.
 
2) The student will learn how to analyze and critique advertising.
 
3) The student will be able to identify racial and gender issues in news and entertainment.
 
4) The student will observe the media's role in politics and how polls reflect and shape public opinion.
 
5) The student will be able analyze film, video, television, the Internet and print for effects created through production and editing techniques.
 
6) The student will become aware of what the news includes, what it leaves out, and why those decisions are made.
 
7) The student will begin to recognize point of view and balance in reporting.
